LATEST COVID-19 DEVELOPMENTS:

* Australia surpassed the 90 per cent first-dose vaccination rate for people 16 years and over on Thursday, however medical experts are warning Australians not to let their guard down against COVID-19.

* Health Minister Greg Hunt described reaching the milestone as an "extraordinary achievement" and said Australia was on track to have one of highest vaccination rates in the world against COVID-19.

* NSW recorded 261 new local COVID-19 cases and one death as its premier promised to review procedures that have forced hundreds of schools and childcare centres to close due to the virus.

* Victoria detected another 1313 COVID-19 infections and four deaths as the state announced more elective surgeries will be performed after being put on hold.

* Meanwhile, Victorian crossbench MP Andy Meddick says he is fearful of politicians' safety amid heated debate over the state government's proposed pandemic laws.

* The ACT reported nine new COVID-19 cases as Canberra gets ready to ease some of its last remaining virus restrictions.

* A Gold Coast Uber driver is one of two new local COVID-19 cases in Queensland, with authorities warning the region could be subject to tighter restrictions.

AUSTRALIAN VACCINATION NUMBERS:

* There have been 37,231,932 doses administered in the national COVID-19 vaccination rollout up to Wednesday, including 154,133 in the previous 24 hours.

* Of the total, 21,986,214 have been administered by the Commonwealth (an increase of 107,865 in the previous 24 hours).

* 15,245,718 have been administered by the states and territories, including 46,268 in the previous 24 hours.

* Prior to the vaccination milestone announcement, 89.9 per cent of people 16 and over nationwide had received at least their first dose and 81.9 per cent are double dosed.

AUSTRALIAN CORONAVIRUS NUMBERS:

* Australia reported 1585 local cases: 1313 in Victoria, 261 in NSW, nine in the ACT and two in Queensland.

* There were three overseas-acquired infections in NSW and one in Queensland.

* The national death toll is 1862: Victoria 1209 (+4), NSW 608 (+1), ACT 14, Tasmania 13, WA 9, Queensland 7 and SA 4. (Two Queensland residents who died in NSW have been included in the official tolls of both states.)

GLOBAL CORONAVIRUS NUMBERS:

* Cases: at least 251,407,386.

* Deaths: at least 5,072,671.

* Vaccine doses administered: at least 7,347,985,340.
