Larry Fitzgerald buys minority stake in Suns
Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald is going to be at a lot more Phoenix Suns games moving forward. Fitzgerald purchased a minority stake in the Suns recently, according to NFL.com.
The 36-year-old Fitzgerald considered the move for a couple years. When Fitzgerald flirted with retirement following the 2017 season, he was approached by Robert Sarver, who owns the Suns. Fitzgerald considered Sarver’s offer to purchase a stake in the club and finally decided to take Sarver up on it. Fitzgerald told NFL.com he needed some time to think things over.
"I had never really given it any thought before then," Fitzgerald said. "I asked him to give me a little bit of time to think about it and wrap my mind around it. I thought it was a unique opportunity because I hadn't heard of many other [athletes] doing it, but I wanted to really think about it because it's a substantial capital commitment. It's not something small."
Fitzgerald isn’t the only NFL player to own a stake in an NFL team, but it’s a fairly exclusive club. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the only other player in that group. Rodgers has a minority stake in the Milwaukee Bucks.
As Fitzgerald explained, the minority stake in the Suns keeps him connected to Arizona moving forward. While Fitzgerald agreed to come back to the Cardinals for another year, he’s getting close to hanging up his cleats.
When Fitzgerald retires, he now has a reason to stay in Arizona. The Suns should keep him busy.
