Landlord accused of being 'passive aggressive' over gift to tenants

A landlord’s gift to tenants is being both scrutinised and praised online, with some people accusing the landlord of being “passive aggressive”.

A woman shared a photo of the house warming gift she had put together for her new tenant in a Facebook group, explaining she collected the items to help the tenant keep the renovated unit in “good order”.

The package included various cleaning supplies, toilet paper and a clothes basket. The post quickly amassed over 500 comments and a range of opinions on the suitability of the gesture.

“As a tenant I’d find this passive aggressive,” one person said in the comments. “I probably wouldn’t use it and buy my own”.

“A food hamper is a gesture of kindness... not expectation,” one person said.

“Cleaning products? No... Rude,” another person offered.

However most people saw the value in giving the hamper, some exclaiming they would love to receive such a gift, with one person asking the woman to be their landlord.

“What an amazing gesture,” one person said in support of the gift.

“Such a positive thing to do and I am sure the new tenants would be grateful unlike a few people on this page.

“I absolutely love that you have taken the time to source some logical things and topped it off with a treat of Tim Tams. Brilliant!”

Another woman said she received something similar once and she found it “super handy”.

“I buy more natural products but there have been times where I have run out and not had time to go to the shops so these handy back ups have helped out at times.”

However, the landlord confirmed the tenant was very appreciative of the gift, adding a clothes basket and pegs were at the bottom of the 22-year-old’s shopping list.
