Kylie Minogue opens up about her ‘emotional’ return to Neighbours

Fans were delighted when it was announced that superstars Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan will be reprising their roles as Charlene Mitchell and Scott Robinson for the Neighbours finale next month.

The pair have been labelled as one of the most iconic couples in Aussie TV history, with their wedding episode in 1987 attracting an audience of almost 20 million viewers across Australia and the UK.

Kylie, who earned four Logie Awards during her time on Neighbours, spoke openly with Today’s Brooke Boney on Monday about what it was like getting the call to return.

“For so long it was just like, ‘Well maybe, I don't know if that makes any sense’,” she said.

“I’m still in touch with Jason [Donovan] and Guy [Pearce], and Jason is quite a softy, I have to say. And Jason said, ‘This could be a really nice opportunity to buckle the buckle’, as an ex-boyfriend of mine would say, ‘To circle the circle and say thank you’.”

Kylie went on to say that it was both “lovely and emotional” returning to the show more than 30 years after her departure.

“Driving into Ramsay Street was quite something,” she remarked.

“I was like, firstly, where's all that time go on? Secondly, everything looks exactly the same. Thirdly, Scott, Charlene, Jane, Harold. I mean, it all came flooding back. There was a lot of talking about memories and going back in time.”

‘An emotional experience’

Kylie and Jason’s return to Neighbours was first teased earlier this month when they both shared a cryptic post of a TV script on social media.

The show’s official Instagram account then confirmed the reunion by reposting the snap alongside a statement from executive producer Jason Herbison.

“Scott and Charlene are the ultimate Neighbours couple and it would not feel right to end the show without them,” he said.

“We are thrilled that Jason and Kylie have come home to play a very special part in our series finale. It has been an emotional experience for them, for us and I'm sure it will be for our viewers.”

‘A huge disappointment’

It was announced back in March that Neighbours had been officially cancelled after nearly 37 years and almost 9000 episodes, with production ceasing in June.

“Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show,” a statement shared on the show's Instagram page read.

“To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours.”
