“What’s he like as a human? Because on TV with the thin little tie, he reminds me of like a Westfield security guard,” he remarked. “I'm like, ‘Get a decent tie brother’.”
Sarah began defending Waleed and noted that Kyle didn’t originally like her former Studio 10 co-host Joe Hildebrand either but eventually grew to love him.
“Waleed, he’s got a freak flag that I want to see him fly,” she remarked. “He’s in a rock band, he plays the saxophone and the guitar, he’s a football fanatic.”
Kyle then let out a loud groan and began chanting ‘loser’ over and over.
“Sorry, I thought that was just in my brain but I was saying it,” he said. “No one wants to see Waleed playing the sax. That’s so lame.”
“He’s not going to be playing on the show,” Sarah replied. “But what I’m saying is that there’s a bit more to know about him, he’s a cool guy.”
Sarah went on to share that while her phone has been blowing up this week following the announcement that she will be replacing Carrie Bickmore, Waleed offered her some “great advice”.
“He was just like, ‘You know what, we’re here to do a job. All this other noise outside just doesn’t matter’,” she recalled. “He’s quite sensible in that way.”
Channel Ten announced on Wednesday that Sarah, who has been hosting the morning talk show Studio 10 since its inception in 2013, would be taking over Carrie’s role on The Project in 2023.
“I’m beyond excited to be joining one of Australia’s most iconic and agenda-driving shows,” she said in a statement from the network. “The Project does news like no other program in Australia and it’s exactly the kind of fun and fearless TV I love to make.”
Sarah and Waleed will host the show from Monday to Thursday, while Hamish Macdonald will host on Friday and Sunday and Georgie Tunny will appear on the show on Friday nights.
“I can’t wait to share the desk with Waleed, Hamish, Georgie and the rest of the team,” Sarah added. “I’m excited to shake it up in the new year!”
Waleed said about Sarah: “She’s smart. She’s warm. She’s great fun. That’s the trifecta for The Project. Everyone who’s worked with Sarah raves about her, and I can’t wait to become one of them.”
