A man has been left with life-threatening injuries after he was shot in the chest by police.

A 45-year-old man has been shot following an incident in North Toowoomba on Monday afternoon.

Police visited a residential property on Ruthven Street about 4.40pm on Monday related to a man wanted for questioning.

The man, armed with a knife, allegedly came towards police, who then shot him in the chest.

He was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.

Investigations are ongoing and a crime scene has been established.

Two police officers were treated at hospital for minor injuries.

The investigation will be subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission, while the Ethical Standards Command is investigating the incident.
