Klopp on squad rotation, praise for youngsters and Toulouse 'respect'

Nicola Pearson, BBC Sport

Jurgen Klopp has been speaking to the media before Liverpool's Europa League game against Toulouse on Thursday.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

  • Klopp confirmed that Virgil van Dijk is unavailable though illness, while Ryan Gravenberch will miss out with a "niggle" in his knee and Curtis Jones similarly through a "low-grade" hamstring issue.

  • On Luis Diaz who is waiting for news from Colombia: "Positive signs but no real news yet. He decided last week that he can’t get to Colombia. Tthat is the case at the moment, so he is here. In training, it is a safe place with the team and he wants to be with us. He is available."

  • On squad rotation for Europa League matches: "We will make changes, for tomorrow. I'm not sure how many but it will be a few probably and it will be a strong team. That is all I need and we will go for it."

  • He feels it is "really good" to have youngster Ben Doak available again after impressing early in the season because "we have to make changes with quality and Ben has obvious quality."

  • Asked whether he has been surprised by how Jarell Quansah has stepped up, he said: "If you would have asked me in pre-season would he have been that good I would have been surprised, but since then I have seen him every day and not surprised anymore. He showed from the first day of pre-season how good he is and how good he will be. It is so great to have a boy from the academy with that quality and potential."

  • He has been "impressed" by all three teams in the group, but "especially" Toulouse as they "caused us problems until we understood more what they were trying to do. The supporters were exceptional, I think they enjoyed their time at Anfield and rightly so."

  • As a result, he anticipates "a proper atmosphere": "I expect Toulouse to go for it. You need to win home games in European competitions. Toulouse will see that and will try and use that chance and that atmosphere. Wehave to make sure we are ready."
