King Charles France visit – Monarch bids Macrons farewell at Elysee Palace after historic speech

King Charles III and President Emmanuel Macron shook hands and stood together on the steps of the Elysee Palace before they bade each other farewell towards the end of the second day of the monarch’s state visit to France.

Queen Camilla and French First Lady Brigitte Macron also exchanged warm pleasantries, after the pair earlier bonded over a hilarious game of table tennis.

The match went ahead after the King made a powerful and historic speech on Thursday, becoming the first British Monarch to ever address the French senate.

For the rest of the day, the royals visited the Paris flower market and Notre Dame where they learned about the restoration work taking place to fix the 19th-century cathedral that was engulfed by a frightening blaze in 2019.

The King then went to the Natural History Museum where French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his gratitude for the Charles’ lengthy commitment to climate change.

The state visit comes six months after widespread rioting in France sparked by Mr Macron’s pension reforms forced the trip to be postponed.

Charles and Camilla are visiting Paris and Bordeaux, six months after the trip had to be rescheduled because of widespread rioting across the country.

As well as the photograph album, the King gave Mr Macron a complete edition of Voltaire's writings when he visited the Elysee Palace, the president's official residence, on Wednesday afternoon.

The works have been edited by Professor Nicholas Cronk, a leading UK academic at Oxford University and director of the Voltaire Foundation.

Started in 1968, the complete works, comprising 205 volumes, was only completed in April 2022 and included Letters on the English, a series of essays by the French Enlightenment writer and philosopher, based on his experiences living in Britain between 1726 and 1729.

In return, Mr Macron gave the King a golden coin featuring Charles's portrait, as well as a prize-winning French novel.

The couples exchanged pleasantries as they stood at the end of a red carpet in the palace courtyard, laughing together. Mr Macron appeared particularly animated, chatting with the gathered media.

As they entered Mr Macron's lavishly decorated office, Charles jokingly asked if the waiting photographers were always there.

The King and president left the building, deep in conversation, to plant an oak tree which was also given by Mr Macron.

Camilla wore a dusky pink, wool crepe coat-dress by Fiona Clare, and a pink beret-style hat by milliner Philip Treacy.

The couple had earlier landed at Paris Orly airport, where they were greeted with a guard of honour from an officer and 20 guardsmen of the Republican Guard, which is part of the French National Gendarmerie.

Speaking at the state banquet, the King also said relations between the UK and France have not always been "straightforward", but went on to stress the unity between the nations.

Charles went on to mention the importance of Britain working with France to tackle climate change.

He went on: "Mr President, in all of this we can rely on our firm friendship, which is renewed and reinvigorated with each new generation.

"I would like, if you would allow me, to raise a toast to President and Madame Macron and to the French people, as well as to our entente cordiale - a sustainable alliance.

France pulled out all the stops to give an extravagant welcome to King Charles and Queen Camilla - from a red carpet runway to a lavish state banquet.

The trip comes six months late as riots sparked by pension reforms broke out all over the country, making it unsafe for the trip to go ahead.

The British monarchs touched down yesterday at Paris-Orly airport at 2pm and were greeted by French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, other diplomats and guardsmen.

The windy weather left Queen Camilla who was dressed head-to-toe in dusky pink grappling onto her hat as she followed her husband down the stairs.

Next, the couple arrived at the Arc-de-Triomphe where they were greeted by Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron to be met with a grand remembrance ceremony.

Macron and Charles laid wreaths and the King lit the eternal flame which burns in memory of those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Fighter jets flew above as they let off vapour trails in both nations’ colours- red, white and blue.

Next, the leaders exchanged gifts at the Palace Elysées. King Charles III impressed onlookers as he delivered a speech in the senate in fluent French, with some English interludes.

The King’s address this morning addressed a matter of issues including Russia’s war on Ukraine, the two nations’ longstanding bond, a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, global warming and the Rugby World Cup.

Delivering nearly the entirety of his speech in French, some viewers praised his prowess in the language whilst others took to social media to critique his pronunciation.

Malcolm Massey, French language expert at the learning website Babbel, told the Telegraph:

“The King uses the comfort of his British English intonations, pace and tone with his relatively ‘good’ French accent. One of his strong points is his pronunciation of the nasal [ɛ̃] for words like un, bien, lien etc. almost perfect.

“Specifically, he accentuates his French vowels with appropriate length to not sound forced, (shows that he’s had experience around French speakers).

“He takes a slower pace compared to English to really focus on correct pronunciation, but he hardly tripped up on any words.”

Other social media, who claims to be a wasn’t so impressed. They commented: “King Charles’ French accent is appalling.”

Macron thanked King Charles for his lifelong dedication to combatting climate change.

During his speech at Paris’s National History Museum, he said: “You started years ago and I want to commend you because when you launched this initiative and SMI, you started to gather a lot of different people and to create this momentum precisely for climate and biodiversity.

“I remember G7 during which you preached in front of a lot of leaders following this line.

“I want to really thank you, You started years ago with this conviction and this is where we are.”

The president carried on to express his belief climate change, biodiversity and poverty are interlinked.

He said: “You cannot separate and ask a country to choose between fighting against poverty, preserving biodiversity or fixing climate change consequences.”

Queen Camilla was a vision in blue as she attended the star-studded Versailles banquet last night, she paid a special tribute to the Queen by wearing her sapphires.

A jewellery expert explains the collection of jewellery is named the King George VI Victoria Suite which comprises of a sapphire and diamond cluster line necklace, sapphire earrings and a bracelet.

The set was one of her most meaningful jewels, says the expert, as the necklace and earrings were gifted to her by her father on her wedding day in 1947.

She later commissioned the matching bracelet in the sixties.

Steven Stone’s leading jewellery expert, Maxwell Stone, commented: “It’s heart-warming to see that Queen Camilla wore Queen Elizabeth II’s King George VI Victoria Suite for the state dinner at the Palace of Versailles as a sweet nod to Queen Elizabeth II.

“This isn’t the first time that Queen Camilla has worn the suite and she famously wore it to King Charles’ first state banquet - an evening which also marked the first official state visit hosted by the UK since he became monarch.”

I’d estimate the suite to be worth a staggering £5,000,000.”

The King met sports stars such as former Chelsea footballer Didier Drogba and French rugby prop Demba Bamba, who says the visit has boosted morale.

Charles chatted with Demba Bamba and Welsh rugby player Dan Biggar, who said the King‘s visit has given France a lift.

Bamba added: “Everyone in France is enjoying the World Cup at the minute, so it’s great to have this visit now.”

Camilla and Mrs Macron then joined a group of children in an inflatable boxing ring, where she hugged a few of them, before they all posed for a picture.

The Queen encouraged the children to “say cheese”, before adding “fromage”.

Charles later visited a nearby coffee shop to speak with representatives from Objectif Emploi, which helps vulnerable young people find work.

Charles and Camilla pay respect to Notre Dame

Charles and his wife Queen Camilla visited at length Notre-Dame cathedral, which was ravaged by a fire in 2019, listening to detailed explanations of the restoration works.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Charles have shared correspondence and insight on the restoration of the cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century.

“My wife and I were utterly heartbroken to learn of the terrible fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral,” Charles said in a letter at the time.

“It is a treasure for all mankind and, as such, to witness its destruction in this most dreadful conflagration is a shattering tragedy, the unbearable pain of which we all share.”

The royal couple and Macron, with his wife Brigitte, spoke with firefighters who were on the spot the night of the Notre-Dame blaze. “We were afraid it would just crumble,” one firefighter told Charles and Camilla.

King calls for courage tackling climate change after Sunak’s slowdown

The King has branded global warming "our most existential challenge" a day after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak scaled back key green efforts to tackle the climate crisis.

Charles made the remarks in a historic address during his state visit to France as he became the first British monarch to speak in the French senate chamber.

He called for a new Entente Cordiale designed to tackle the global climate emergency, and stressed the need to "stride forward with hope and courage", with his 18-minute long speech - prompting a standing ovation.

French President Emmanuel Macron later paid tribute to the King's long-standing "conviction" and "preaching" on tackling climate change, as the pair visited a sustainability reception for business leaders and ministers at the Natural History Museum in Paris.

Mr Sunak has faced fierce criticism after weakening a host of pledges on Wednesday designed to help the UK reach net zero by 2050.

He pushed back a ban on new petrol and diesel cars by five years and watered down the plan to phase out gas boilers by 2035, but has insisted he is "absolutely not slowing down" efforts.

The monarch, as the Prince of Wales, spent decades passionately campaigning on green and environmental issues.
