Kiely Rodni news - live: Family breaks silence after recovery of ‘more than likely’ missing teen’s body

The family of Kiely Rodni broke their silence on Monday afternoon, after a body which is ‘more than likely’ of the missing California teenager, was found inside an upside-down car under 14 feet of water.

Adventures With Purpose, a volunteer group that helps find missing people underwater, was requested to join the search by law enforcement. Roughly 30 minutes after the amateur diver began their search on Sunday, they found a body and car presumed to be Kiely’s in the Prosser Creek Reservoir.

“We began our search for Kiely on August 21 at 10:40am ... By 11.15am, Nick [Rinn] detected an object underwater using cutting-edge garment solar technology,” diver Doug Bishop said during a press conference on Monday.

Following the discovery, the Rodni-Nieman family in a statement said: “We are eternally grateful for the love and support you have shown us in the last couple of weeks.”

“While we accept this sadness cast under death’s shadow, the rising sun shines light upon us, reminding us not to mourn our loss, but to celebrate Kiely’s spirit and the gift that we all received in knowing her.

“Kiely will surely remain with us even though we will not get her back.”

Joe Petito, the father of Gabby Petito who disappeared during a cross-country trip last year, offered condolences to Kiely Rodni’s family.

“My condolences to Kiely Rondi’s family. May she rest in peace (sic),” he tweeted on Monday.

Mr Petito added: “The emotions all come back to the surface when you see things like this.”

Last September, Gabby, then 22, went missing during a cross-country trip with her fiance Brian Laundrie.

Her strangled body was discovered the next month on the edge of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

Laundrie admitted killing her in a notebook discovered near his body in a Florida swamp, where he took his own life, authorities have said.

Water “receded’ at lake where Kiely’s car was found

Captain Sam Brown with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said that some of the information circulating in media reports was “deceiving.”

When asked by reporters how the agencies had missed the car — said to be only 15 feet deep underwater, according to AWP — Captain Brown said that since Kiely’s disappearance on 6 August, the water level had dropped a vertical three feet and a potential 20 to 25 feet off offshore.

The family of Kiely Rodni released their first public statement following the discovery of the body, which is likely to the missing teen.

“We are eternally grateful for the love and support you have shown us in the last couple of weeks,” the Rodni-Nieman family said in a statement.

“We have weathered a storm of unfathomable force, and it is purely thanks to the army of warriors, matriarchs, healers, and helpers holding us up that we continue to stand today.

“While we accept this sadness cast under death’s shadow, the rising sun shines light upon us, reminding us not to mourn our loss, but to celebrate Kiely’s spirit and the gift that we all received in knowing her.”

Truckee police defend against criticism of search for Kiely

05:00 , Andrea Blanco

Law enforcement officials offered a plethora of reasons why they had failed to find the body in the weeks since Kiely was last seen at a party in Prosser Family Campground, which 200 to 300 teenagers and young adults attended.

The Prosser Creek Reservoir, a lake next to the campground, had previously been searched extensively by law enforcement who had spent more than 20,000 hours trying to find the missing teen.

Nevada County Sheriff Captain Sam Brown credited authorities, peace officers and volunteers for “eliminating areas we’d still be searching,” and paving a way for AWP to find the body - which has not yet been officially identified.

Amateur divers found body in search for Kiely Rodni after weeks-long investigation

04:00 , Andrea Blanco

On Sunday, a dive crew announced that it had found a body and an overturned car in Prosser Creek Reservoir in Truckee, California – appearing to bring a tragic end to a huge two-week search for the missing teen.

Adventures With Purpose (AWP), a volunteer search organisation which helps find missing people, said that the silver 2013 Honda CRV was upside down 14 feet underwater in the lake and that a body was inside.

The organisation said that the vehicle – which matches the make and model of Kiely’s – has the teen’s Californian license plate number 8YUR127 and that the remains are believed to be those of the missing 16-year-old.

Law enforcement officials are yet to make an official identification of the body.

Authorities say they did not advise AWP against searching in lake where body was found

03:00 , Andrea Blanco

Captain Sam Brown with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office refuted claims from a diver with AWP that they were told that the lake had already been searched extensively, saying that law enforcement officials “shared maps, ping information and location” with the volunteer organisation.

“The Adventures with Purpose folks did a fantastic job at being able to locate the vehicle as quickly as they did, based on, again, a lot of heavy lifting that the folks behind me have done over the last couple of weeks,” Sheriff Shannon Moon said, as officials with California Highway Patrol and Nevada County stood behind her.

Police say they learned Kiely’s car was found after reading social media post

02:00 , Andrea Blanco

When asked by reporters how they found out that Kiely’s car had been found by Adventure with Purpose divers, Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said law enforcement had read an online post.

“I don’t know that we receive a first call, I think we reached out to them after we read it online,” Captain Sam Brown said.

“From the unified command ... none of us was [made] aware.”

Captain Brown said that it was possible one of the 150 investigators engaged in the search had received a call but did not pass on the information.

Body found in Prosser Creek Reservoir yet to be confirmed Kiely’’s

Authorities said at a press conference on Monday morning that officials were still unable to confirm the identity of the body found inside a vehicle in Prosser Creek Reservoir in Truckee, California, but believe that it is that of the 16-year-old.

“We believe it is our missing person,” Nevada County Sheriff Shannon Moon said. “We have not been able to positively identify [her], but it is more than likely where we are right now.”

Adventures with Purpose, the amateur divers who found Kiely’s car

Tuesday 23 August 2022 00:00 , Andrea Blanco

A volunteer diving team has made a significant discovery in the search for Kiely Rodni after more than two weeks and tens of thousands of law enforcement hours spent searching for the missing teenager.

Adventures With Purpose (AWP), a group of volunteer divers dedicated to search and rescue efforts involving missing people, announced Sunday that it had found a car and body in California’s Prosser Creek Reservoir after police invited the group to help with the case.

A diver for the AWP announced on 16 August – 10 days after Truckee teenager Kiely went missing – that they would leave their base in Oregon to join the search in north California.

The Independent’s Gino Spocchia has the full story with more details about AWP’s efforts to help solve cold cases across the country.

Who are the AWP divers who discovered body in search for Kiely Rodni?

Kiely almost didn’t attend tragic party

Monday 22 August 2022 23:30 , Andrea Blanco

Lindsey Rodni-Nieman, Kiely’s mother, spoke to The Independent on August 11 and revealed that her daughter almost didn’t go to the campground party the night she disappeared

Ms Rodni-Nieman said that Kiely had planned to go to a car show in Reno with her on Friday night but texted her during the day to say that she was going to go to a party at the Prosser Family Campground instead.

“There was this classic car show in Reno – she’s so dynamic she loves everything from playing the violin to car shows – and so she was maybe going to see some drag races with us there,” she said.

Ms Rodni-Nieman said Kiely instead asked her to go to the party. She texted her mother she was on her way home shortly before midnight on 6 August but failed to return.

Kiely was “too intoxicated” to drive

Monday 22 August 2022 23:00 , Andrea Blanco

Speaking to The Independent just days after her friend vanished, Samantha Smith, 18, recounted she was the last person to speak with 16-year-old Kiely after midnight on 6 August.

Ms Smith led efforts to find her friend and appealed to teens to come forward with information about the campground party Kiely vanished from.

“At 12.36am she called me … and this is the last call anybody had with her. We said ‘love you, good night. Get home safe,’ and that’s the last thing we heard of her,” she said at the time.

Ms Smith said that Kiely “was in no state to drive and she wouldn’t have made it far or would have crashed.”

The technology used by AWP divers to find Kiely’s vehicle

Monday 22 August 2022 22:30 , Andrea Blanco

A diver for AWP told local news station KCRA-TV that the group’s sonar technology could have made the difference in the search for Kiely, whose cellphone was last traced to the edge of the Prosser Creek Reservoir on 6 August.

While law enforcement agencies deployed boats in the search, AWP used sonar radar tools to detect objects underneath the water surface – such as sunken cars.

AWP spokesperson Josh Cantu added to the Post that even Sonar technology can miss objects underwater if operators are not fully trained or experienced.

Weeks-long search for Kiely could come to an end

Monday 22 August 2022 21:31 , Andrea Blanco

Kiely Rodni vanished without a trace in the early hours of 6 August after going to the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee for a party of 200 to 300 teenagers and young adults.

She was last seen at around 12.30am at the site – a hotspot for local teen gatherings – and her cellphone last pinged at 12.33am close to Prosser Creek Reservoir. Her car had also not been seen since.

On Sunday, volunteer dive team Adventure with Purpose found a vehicle believed to contain Kiely’s remains. Law enforcement is yet to make an official identification but said during a press conference on Monday “we believe [the body] is our missing person.”

Adventures with Purpose to join search for missing California woman

Monday 22 August 2022 21:11 , Andrea Blanco

After making a breakthrough discovery in the search for Kiely on Sunday, volunteer dive crew Adventures with Purpose will be joining the search for missing 22-year-old Jolissa Fuentes in Selma, California.

Ms Fuentes was last seen at about 4am on 7 August driving a 2011 Hyundai into and out of a AM/PM gas station near her home in Selma on Nebraska Avenue and has not been heard from since.

It was not clear where she was heading, although her family told Fox News on Friday that the area is near vineyards and orchards that Ms Fuentes would sometimes visit to clear her head, especially after the death of a friend last year.

Authorities backtrack on initial abduction suspicions

Monday 22 August 2022 20:41 , Andrea Blanco

When asked why the case had been initially treated as an abduction, Captain Brown with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said that it was a “miscommunication” and authorities never confirmed the abduction to the media.

When The Independent contacted the Placer County Sheriff’s Office in the early stages of the investigation, a spokesperson said the case was being treated as an abduction because Kiely’s car had been missing along with the teen.

Police deny telling AWP divers they had already searched the site where Kiely’s body was found

Monday 22 August 2022 20:20 , Andrea Blanco

Captain Sam Brown with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office dismissed claims from a diver with AWP that they were told that the lake had already been searched extensively, saying that law enforcement officials “shared maps, ping information and location” with the volunteer organisation.

Local authorities face criticism after volunteers found vehicle and body

Monday 22 August 2022 19:38 , Andrea Blanco

During a press conference on Monday, officials were questioned about how a volunteer dive team was able to locate the missing vehicle and car within the space of a few short hours in the same lake that law enforcement had been searching – unsuccessfully – for two weeks.

Captain Sam Brown of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office explained that “it takes a level of expertise” to find something in a vast body of water.

He dismissed claims from a diver with AWP that they were told that the lake had already been searched extensively, saying that law enforcement officials “shared maps, ping information and location” with the volunteer organisation.

Authorities say they ‘believe body found is Kiely Rodni’

Monday 22 August 2022 19:13 , Andrea Blanco

Nevada County Sheriff’s Office officials said during a press conference on Monday that the body found by diving team Adventures with Purpose is ‘more than likely’ Kiely’s.

“All of [our previous] work did lead us to where we are,” sheriff Shannon Moon said.

“We recovered the vehicle last night. We believe it is our missing person. We have not been able to positively identify [her], but it is more than likely where we are right now.”

Authorities say car found in Prosser’s lake matches Kiely’s vehicle description

Monday 22 August 2022 19:00 , Andrea Blanco

Law enforcement told ABC News on Monday that a car found 15 feet underwater at the Prosser Creek Reservoir by volunteer diving team Adventures with Purpose matches the description of the vehicle that Kiely was driving.

A spokesperson for the Placer County sheriff’s office told The Independent that she could not yet confirm the body’s identity, but that investigators from local police forces and the FBI are at the scene.

Law enforcement officials are yet to make an official identification of the body. A press conference is scheduled at 2pm EST.

‘It took just minutes,’ to find Kiely’s car

Monday 22 August 2022 18:35 , Andrea Blanco

Nick Rinn, an AWP diver, told the New York Post he found a body in a car within minutes of entering the water, and while it was close to the shoreline, it had not been visible above the water – only via sonar.

“I went down and did my inspection. I saw the vehicle upside down, verified the license plate and that there were remains in the vehicle,” he said. “Then I came out, we called the family and authorities and let them take it from there.”

According to fellow diver Doug Bishop, it is the first case the team has solved since Mr Rinn joined.

The diving team that found body in Kiely’s search has solved over 20 cases

Monday 22 August 2022 18:29 , Andrea Blanco

Adventures With Purpose (AWP) is a group of volunteer divers dedicated to search and rescue efforts involving missing people.

Although they specialize in cold cases, the crew joined the search for Kiely Rodni upon law enforcement’s request.

Their breakthrough findings on Sunday could put an end to the two-week-long search for the missing 16-year-old.

According to KCRA, AWP has helped solve d23 missing person cases since 2019. They usually join cold case investigations in which resources have been scaled back or completely cut.

They do not charge families and are able to continue their efforts thanks to donations from the public.

Divers say they are ‘thankful to law enforcement’ for inviting them to join the search

Monday 22 August 2022 18:05 , Andrea Blanco

The amateur divers thanked law enforcement for inviting them to join the search but did not disclose what specific agency made the request.

Doug Bishop said that the AWP crew was especially grateful to the FBI and credited his team’s commitment to helping families and the use of cutting-edge Garmin Solar Techonology for the breakthrough in the search for Kiely.

“We understand that the resources we provide with our unique skillset is rare. It is an honour to help agencies and families all across the nation,” Mr Bishop said on Monday.

“We will be working together with authorities to share this knowledge within the next couple of days.”

AWP divers located Kiely’s vehicle in less than an hour

Monday 22 August 2022 17:20 , Andrea Blanco

Diver Doug Bishop said the team was able to locate Kiely’s vehicle with the help of cutting-edge Garmin Solar Technology.

“We began our search for Kiely on August 21 at 10:40am. We placed two solar boats on the water. By 11.15am, Nick detected an object underwater using cutting-edge garment sonar technology,” Mr Bishop said.

“I was able to confirm that it was in fact a vehicle in roughly 15ft of water, only 55ft offshore. After marking the vehicle with our magnet. Nick suited up in his dive gear and conducted the dive.”

Mr Bishop said they notified the family and law enforcement and Kiely’s father and grandfather were at the Prosser Creek Reservoir within minutes.

‘It bothers me’, says resident of police response

Monday 22 August 2022 17:00 , Gino Spocchia

Members of the community in Truckee, California, have also appeared to criticise the police investigation into Kiely Rodni’s disappearance.

According to KCRA-TV, many called into question why volunteers were able to make a significant discovery before law enforcement on Sunday.

“For them to not be able to find her, it bothers me a little, honestly,” said Truckee resident Gitana DeCoulode to the local news station. “Why don’t they have the equipment that [they] had, to find her? Why? Where we live, we have bodies of water everywhere.”

Another resident added that the search was not easy for law enforcement and that the volunteer search and rescue team, Adventures with Purpose, had specific tools at hand.

“I don’t fault law enforcement in any way. I know they put in thousands of hours in searching,” a resident of nearby Reno, Greg Bishop, said. “Adventures with Purpose just has a specialty. They have the knowledge in reading their sonar equipment.”

Police had scaled back response before lake discovery

Monday 22 August 2022 16:27 , Ginno Spocchia

The number of personnel assigned to the search for Kiely Rodni had been considerably scaled back before the discovery made by volunteer divers on Sunday.

In an update on Saturday, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said seven personnel were on the case. Whilst on 18 August, 91 members of law enforcement were attached to it.

The figures reflected earlier statements from police that the investigation into the 16-year-old’s disappearance was entering a more “limited” phase last week, after a thousand-plus tips proved largely insignificant.

Divers for Adventures With Purpose told the New York Post that police had reassured them the lake near to Ms Rodni’s last known location had been searched rigorously with boats before they located a vehicle with a body inside.

AWP was asked to join the search by law enforcement

Monday 22 August 2022 15:55 , Andrea Blanco

The amateur divers said in a YouTube video posted before they joined the search that although they don’t usually work ‘fresh’ missing person cases, they decided to travel to Truckee after being asked by law enforcement.

“This is different from what we do ... we specialize in cold cases, cases that resources are no longer being administered in,” Doug Bishop said.

“However, upon being requested, we will finish what we were doing here in Wisconsin and we will be on our way.”

Just one day after joining search efforts, the cold case diving team found a car and body believed to be Kiely’s 14 feet underwater at Prosser Creek reservoir.

AWP did not disclose the law enforcement agency that made the invitation.

Sonar technology helped divers make discovery

Monday 22 August 2022 15:30 , Gino Spocchia

Divers for Adventures With Purpose told KCRA-TV that they used sonar to search the Prosser Creek Reservoir over the weekend.

A diver for the group added that it was likely sonar technology helped find the car and body in the same location law enforcement had been looking using boats.

Sonar radar is able to detect objects under the surface of the water and is often used in search and recovery missions.

Volunteers found car and body on third day of search

Monday 22 August 2022 14:40 , Gino Spocchia

Although law enforcement agencies had committed nearly 20,000 personnel hours into the search and investigation into Kiely Rodni’s whereabouts, the discovery of a car and body in the Californian lake came only three days into the search carried out by volunteers from Adventures With Purpose, according to KCRA-TV.

The volunteer rescue diving team announced the discovery of a car and body at the bottom of Prosser Creek Reservoir on Sunday, on the 16th day of the search for the missing teen.

The scene is near to where police said Ms Rodni’s cellphone last pinged on the night of her disappearance on 6 August, when she had attended a large party nearby.

“The identity of the decedent has not been confirmed. This is a developing situation, and we will provide updates when we can.” the sheriff’s office said on Sunday night.

Volunteer divers appear critical of ‘rigorous’ police search

Monday 22 August 2022 12:30 , Gino Spocchia

A spokesman for Adventures With Purpose has said police reassured them that the area of the reservoir where a car and body were found on Sunday had been checked off the list.

Josh Cantu told The New York Post: “Police told us they did a rigorous search of this body of water. They gave us a grid map and made us confident we didn’t need to search here.”

Within minutes of entering the Prosser Creek Reservoir however, volunteer search and rescue diver Nick Rinn said he found the car and a body inside. Both of which have been removed by authorities.

“I went down and did my inspection,” the diver told the Post.‘”I saw the vehicle upside down, verified the license plate and that there were remains in the vehicle. Then I came out, we called the family and authorities and let them take it from there.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies have been at the scene of the lake and investigating the dissapearance of Kiely Rodni since 6 August.

Police struggle to find witnesses from the party

Monday 22 August 2022 08:30 , Stuti Mishra

The investigation into disappearance of Kiely Rodni has been facing several challenges including lack of witnesses who have seen seen Ms Rodni leave the party.

“People aren’t talking to us,” Placer County sheriff’s office public information officer Angela Musallam told the New York Post last week.

Ms Musallam said many of the 200-300 attendees of the party were underage and may be worried that coming forward will get them in legal trouble.

The sheriff’s office has repeatedly stressed that people should come forward without fear of repercussions because investigators’ only concern is learning what happened to Kiely.

“A lot of people from the party may be in college or may be just about to start college and they’re afraid they will ruin their future if they say something,” Ms Musallam told the Post.

Where is Prosser Creek Reservoir, where presumed body of Kiely Rodni was found?

Monday 22 August 2022 06:30 , Stuti Mishra

There is still no confirmation whether the body that was found inside a car in the lake at Prosser Creek Reservoir yesterday is of Kiely Rodni.

The car found 14 feet under water is believed to be a 2013 Honda CRV that Ms Rodni was driving, based on the statements of the volunteer divers’ group, but there’s no official confirmation of that either.

Prosser Creek Reservoir is surrounded by rugged mountains, dense forest and wildlife and is just a few minutes away from Truckee in the Tahoe National Forest where the teenager was last spotted at a large party.

The sprawling shoreline of Prosser Creek lake makes it popular for water sports such as canoeing, paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing and swimming.

The lake is open for visitors year-round from sunrise until sunset but it is generally frozen in winters.

Who is Kiely Rodni and how did she vanish from camp party in California

Monday 22 August 2022 05:03 , Stuti Mishra

The desperate search for 16-year-old Kiely Rodni may finally be over after volunteer divers said that they had found her body inside an upside-down car under 14 feet of water.

But the mystery remains over exactly what happened to the California teenager after she vanished from a party at a northern California campground on Saturday 6 August.

Kiely was last seen around 12.30am that morning near the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.

She is described as white, 5’7” tall, and 115 pounds with blonde hair and hazel eyes. She has numerous piercings and jewelry, including a nose ring, and was last seen wearing green Dickies pants and a black tank top.
