KFC customer discovers $800 in her chicken sandwich: 'Amazing'
A KFC customer has been praised for her reaction after discovering $800 cash in her chicken sandwich.
JoAnne Oliver, from Jackson, in the US state of Georgia, went through the drive-thru on Wednesday (local time) to pick up some lunch before heading back to work, police said.
But when she returned to her office to enjoy her meal, the grandmother got quite a surprise.
When she opened the fast food bag, Mrs Oliver discovered US$543.10 (A$808) in cash sitting under her sandwich.
Despite facing millions of dollars in medical bills as her husband fights cancer, Mrs Oliver said she knew she couldn’t keep the money.
“I started counting it and when I got to $500, I stopped and just put it back in the envelope, closed the envelope put the sandwich back the way I got it and just slid it to the side until the officer got here,” she told WSB-TV.
Video footage shows a police officer counting the cash as a stunned Ms Oliver and her work colleagues watch on.
The grandmother — whose fuel tank was almost empty when she picked up the meal — joked that she briefly contemplated going shopping.
“For a second. We thought about going shopping. I said I should have kept a 20, because I’m sitting on E,” she told the publication.
“If you don’t do the right thing it’s gonna come back on you.
“I mean It wasn’t mine. I didn’t need to keep it. I’ll get mine in the future.”
KFC customer praised for honest act
Jackson Police said after an investigation, it was determined the KFC restaurant’s daily deposit had accidentally been placed in Mrs Oliver’s chicken sandwich bag.
“Not only did Mrs Oliver do the right thing but she saved the manager’s job,” police said in statement on their Facebook.
“Mrs Oliver thank you for reminding us that we have amazing citizens in Jackson and it is people like you that make us great!”
Several people have taken to the post to praise the grandmother’s considerate act.
“What a precious woman!” one person said.
“Thank you for giving a lot of people the hope that honesty and integrity is still alive and well,” another wrote.
“Amazing,” another said.
As a thank you, KFC refunded the cost of Mrs Oliver’s lunch and gave her a free meal, WSB-TV reports.
