Kensington Palace and Other Royal Residences Closed in Rare Safety Measure

Several royal palaces in the United Kingdom were closed over the weekend in a rare safety measure, including one where Prince William and his family keep a residence.

Kensington Palace, the future King of England’s home in London, as well as Hampton Court Palace, the home of King Henry VIII in the 1500s, and Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland, were all affected by the closure.

Historic Royal Palaces issued an alert on Sunday, Nov. 24 to let people know that because of Storm Bert, Kensington Palace would be closed that day. Additionally, the message posted on X indicated that more information was available on its website about how the storm was affecting “the gardens at Hampton Court Palace and Hillsborough Castle.”

Thousands of people dealt with power outages across the U.K. due to the storm, which caused high winds, heavy rain, and snow in the region, reports the BBC.

Travel was highly affected as well, with the storm causing highway closures and severe disruption to rail lines.

Last month, burglars broke into farm buildings on the Windsor Castle estate, which houses Prince William’s primary residence. Two intruders who were targeting farm machinery broke in on Oct. 13, reports People.

According to the outlet, William, his wife, Princess Kate, and their three children, George, 11, Charlotte, 9, and Louis, 6, were reportedly sleeping at their home on the grounds when the break-in occurred.

Police are investigating the incident.
