Kath and Kim's Sharon Strzelecki features in new coronavirus ad

One of Australia’s most-loved TV characters has joined calls from authorities for Victorians to continue complying with coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Sharon Strzelecki, the iconic netball fanatic from cult classic Kath and Kim, has featured in a new advertising campaign being rolled out by the Victorian Government.

Played by Australian actress Magda Szubanski, Sharon – clad in a netball bib, skirt and face mask – was shown taking to an empty court for a not-so-friendly game of one-on-one.

After a heated on-court confrontation with herself, Sharon takes a breather in the stands and discusses how she is “ovah” Victoria’s lockdown.

“I tell you what, I am so over this lockdown. Playing netball against yourself is not all it’s cracked up to be, especially when you still can’t even win,” Sharon confesses to the camera.

“But you know what? It’s not the lockdown that’s the enemy, it’s the virus, and the sooner we obey the rules, the sooner this will all be over and we can get back to the stuff that really matters: netty (netball).”

Addressing media on Saturday, Premier Daniel Andrews said he hoped a series of ads, such as this one starring Sharon, across mainstream media would help motivate the community to remain vigilant.

“This is different, this isn't something we have done before, but I think it's important to get the message out there,” Mr Andrews told reporters.

Other ads are set to feature other personalities including Shane Jacobson, Tayla Harris and Waleed Aly, and will begin broadcasting across social media, TV and radio on Saturday.

“A bit of humour, even though this is a challenging time, some humour is a very good thing to just try and remind people that we all have a part to play,” Mr Andrews said.

Victoria recorded another day of less than 200 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, but sadly a further 13 people died.

It came after the state’s daily infections dropped below 200 for the first time in nearly six weeks on Friday as Stage 4 restrictions continue to drive cases down.
