Today’s Karl Stefanovic sparks debate over Australia Day photo: ‘Wake up’

Karl Stefanovic has divided his followers after he shared a photo on social media celebrating Australia Day with his wife Jasmine Yarbrough and their one-year-old daughter Harper.

The Today host spent the day with his family on a boat in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire wearing a banana print shirt and a black Akubra hat, similar to the one Paul Hogan wears in Crocodile Dundee.

“Australia Day in heaven in the Shire. Love this country,” he captioned the post alongside a yellow heart emoji.

The photo also showed Karl drinking XXXX Gold beer and Jasmine enjoying a can of Bundaberg Rum, which quickly sparked a debate from fans in the comments.

“Karl you’re drinking the wrong beer,” one person wrote, followed by someone else who said, “Terrible beer Karlos, wake up”.

“Sh*t beer, you’re a legend and deserve much better than that,” another shared, with a fourth writing, “Bundaberg Rum and XXXX, pretty bogan.”

Although plenty of users were unimpressed with the Channel Nine star’s choice of beverage, there were just as many people supporting his decision.

“Finally you’re drinking XXXX beer!” a fan replied.

“Just your average Queensland couple,” someone else remarked, followed by a different user who said, “Nothing more Aussie than a Bundy in hand”.

“Love the XXXX beer! Always a Queenslander!”, one follower responded, while another added, “Couldn’t be more Queenslander!”.

Karl was born in the Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst but was raised and educated in Queensland, living in both Brisbane and Cairns during his childhood.

Meanwhile, there were several followers who supported the ‘Change The Date’ movement and left comments saying that Karl’s Australia Day post was insensitive.

“It’s Invasion Day,” one person wrote, with someone else calling him “oblivious”.

“I love this country too but we have to CHANGE THE DATE,” another replied.

‘Pretty intense’

Karl’s Instagram post comes shortly after he revealed on Today that his whole family tested positive for Covid-19 at the start of the year.

“The last couple of weeks, going back to January 3 or 4, the whole family tested positive - the whole family went down with COVID-19,” he said.

“It was a bit awful to tell you the truth at times, but we're all clear now. We got through the whole thing, and look, they say it's mild, but it's pretty intense in parts.”
