Kandis Jameson acclaimed as Hay River, N.W.T., mayor
Kandis Jameson has been acclaimed as the mayor of Hay River after running unopposed in the upcoming municipal election.
This is Jameson's third term as mayor; she was first elected in 2018.
Jameson was previously a town councillor and served on a District Education Authority for about 17 years, 10 as chair. She and her husband also operated local business Hay River Disposals for over 20 years. Her background is in finance.
Residents of Hay River and neighbouring Kátł'odeeche First Nation have had a tumultuous few years, seeing unprecedented flooding in 2022 that resulted in the month-long evacuation of the entire town, as well as the 2023 wildfire season that once again forced residents from their homes during a mandatory evacuation order for several weeks.
The nomination period closed on Sept. 23. The last day for voters to challenge candidates in writing to the town's returning officer is 3 p.m. on Sept. 26.
There are 11 people running for eight council seats.
The municipal election in Hay River, as well as Fort Simpson, Fort Smith, Inuvik and Norman Wells, is on Oct 21.
