AC Milan and Juventus defeated in Serie A

Serie A leaders AC Milan have crashed 2-0 at Spezia, offering cross-town rivals Inter Milan a chance to go top of the league when they next take the field.

Third-placed Juventus remained seven points behind Milan after losing at Napoli 1-0.

Giulio Maggiore and Simone Bastoni scored their first Serie A goals as 14th-placed Spezia - in their first match under new American owners - dominated and stunned Milan in the second half.

When asked if it was the best match of his career, Spezia coach Vincenzo Italiano said, "Yes, no doubt.

"Also for that fact that it was against the league leader, a stratospheric side like Milan, and to have done so with this type of performance and managing to win."

Milan did not even have a shot on target.

The Rossoneri are two points clear of Inter, who are at home to Lazio on Sunday.

Whatever the result of that game, it will be first against second when Milan host Inter in the Derby della Madonnina on February 21.

"We have to react and we will certainly do so," Milan coach Stefano Pioli said after his side's third defeat of the season and first away from home since December 2019.

"This is the first defeat we really deserved because we gave much too little on the field.

"It was an awful night for me and for the team."

Champions Juventus produced a lacklustre display in Naples, whose skipper Lorenzo Insigne scored the winner.

He ended his penalty hoodoo against the Bianconeri - having missed his previous three penalties against them - converting in the 31st minute after a handball by Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini.

The goal was Insigne's 100th for Napoli who are fourth, above Roma and Lazio on goal difference.

Juve boss Andrea Pirlo admitted to a lack of focus.

"Defeats are hard to handle and you feel them ... But it is important to continue on with good showings then in March we will look at the standings." Pirlo said.

Torino are two points above the drop zone, drawing a fifth successive match with a goalless outing against mid-table Genoa.
