'Just not on': Truckie's relentless pursuit of boys who hurled rocks at his rig

A truckie who cheated death when a 12 kilogram rock was thrown at his rig from an overpass, has told of how he chased a group of teenagers across four lanes of traffic.

By the time Andrew Martin spotted the teenage boys hurling stones at his cab west of Melbourne on Monday morning, it was too late to dodge the attack.

“Went ‘bang’ and then I realised, and I couldn’t believe it,” he recounted to 7 News.

“Had no time to react or nothing. Copped the full brunt of it.”

Dash cam footage shows the moment three teenagers hurl rocks from a Melton overpass, with one rock smashing the windscreen of the truckie’s cab.

The driver described the impact as “a bit of a shock”.

“I just got sprayed with shrapnel then just managed to pull up safely,” he said.

“It could have easy got another car and caused serious damage or even killed someone.”

He jumped from his rig and ran after the boys across four lanes of freeway, but they got away.

Police are now hunting the culprits, thought to be aged between 12 and 16 years old.

Detective Sergeant Ashely Ryan said the incident could have easily turned fatal.

“It’s incredibly dangerous. The rock itself is incredibly heavy,” he said.

“The likelihood of causing an accident is incredibly high. The rock smashed the windscreen, which can cause serious injury or death.”

After making it safely to Adelaide and having his truck repaired, Mr Martin warned the boys who caused the damage: “It’s just not on. You’re playing with people’s lives.”
