Jurrah charged after car chase

Former AFL player Liam Jurrah has been arrested after a high-speed police chase in Alice Springs.

Jurrah, 25, was driving an orange Holden Commodore along the Stuart Highway south of the Central Australian town on Thursday night when a passing police patrol car identified him as a disqualified driver and tried to stop him.

Police said he was doing 140km/h in a 100-kilometre zone, and said that after a short chase officers stopped following him because the situation became too dangerous.

"We won't continue chasing someone if it will put other people in danger," a police spokesman told AAP on Monday.

Jurrah was arrested on Friday and charged with driving while disqualified in another state, dangerous driving, speeding and ignoring police.

The former Melbourne Demons player was disqualified from driving for a year in South Australia in January after he returned a blood alcohol reading five times the legal limit.

Police say there is no allegation that alcohol was a factor in Thursday's chase.

Jurrah will appear at Alice Springs Magistrates Court on February 21.
