New Jurassic World movie confirmed for 2025 release date

A new Jurassic World sequel will be in cinemas next year.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures has fast-tracked the currently-untitled next instalment of the Jurassic series to release on July 2, 2025 — and new reports suggest Deadpool 2 director David Leitch is in early talks to join the project.

More good news for fans is that key figures from the Jurassic World series are involved, including Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall as producers.

David Koepp, who wrote 1993's Jurassic Park and sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park, will be returning to pen this new Jurassic World film as well. No cast members are attached at this stage.

David Leitch is well versed in big-budget action, having previously directed the Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw as well as having worked on John Wick. Other notable directorial credits include the Brad Pitt action film Bullet Train and Charlize Theron's hit Atomic Blonde.

The filmmaker is also behind the long-awaited big screen version of classic show The Fall Guy, where Ryan Gosling will star as a former TV stuntman-turned-investigator.

Previously, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that sequel to Jurassic World Dominion had been in development for quite some time and would release as soon as 2025.

The publication reported that this is seen as the beginning of an all-new story for the Jurassic franchise, so it wouldn't necessarily involve Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard or any of the Jurassic Park cast.

The sequel news comes a few months after Jurassic World Dominion co-writer, producer and director Colin Trevorrow suggested that none of the Jurassic Park sequels should have happened.

"I specifically did something different than the other films in order to change the DNA of the franchise. The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs," he told Empire last September.

"This one is a story about characters in a world in which they coexist with dinosaurs.

"For the franchise to be able to move forward – because it's inherently unfranchisable, there probably should have only been one Jurassic Park – but if we're gonna do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world in which dinosaurs exist, as opposed to, here's another reason why we're going to an island?"

Jurassic World Dominion made more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office in 2022 but was widely panned by critics at its release.

The film was billed as the final instalment of Trevorrow's Jurassic World trilogy, and thus brought back original franchise stars Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill as part of its storyline.

Jurassic World Dominion is now available to rent and stream.
