Jump in Victorians under 18 taking their own life

·1-min read

Youth suicides continue to rise in Victoria a month after the state's coroner sounded the alarm calling for more intervention.

Figures released by the Coroners Court on Wednesday showed 17 people under the age of 18 had taken their own life so far in 2023.

That's four more than last month.

Since 2019, the number of youth suicides in the same four-month period ranged from two to nine.

In March, Judge John Cain said the community needed to do more to intervene and help at-risk young people.

Overall suicides were up across the state with 254 deaths to the end of April, compared to 231 the year before.
