Julie Bowen admits she didn’t do much to help an injured hiker

Filling in as host on Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday was actress Julie Bowen, and she took the opportunity to clear up a few things about a recent story in the news that says she rescued a fellow hiker who had fainted and cracked her head open. And she said that it was actually her sister, infectious disease specialist Annie Luetkemeyer, who was the one doing the actual helping.

Bowen also said that her 12-year-old twin sons and her 14-year-old son played a more important role than she did, running ahead to alert the hiker’s family and assisting with the bandages.

Despite all that, Bowen pointed out just how much credit she has been given in the media since the story broke, and played a montage of TV news anchors singing her praises and even some elevating her to superhero status.

“My superpower is having a sister who went to med school,” Bowen said.

Fortunately the hiker, whose name is Minnie John, is doing well according to Bowen and was actually quite excited to meet the Modern Family actress, even posting for a picture despite having a head injury.

Video transcript

JULIE BOWEN: I was hiking in Arches National Park in Utah with my sister and my kids, and we found a woman who had fainted. Her name is Minnie John, and she'd been hiking with her husband and her son and she felt dizzy and told them to go ahead.

KYLIE MAR: Actress Julie Bowen was filling in as host of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Tuesday, where she broke down a recent story about her helping a fellow hiker who fainted and cracked her head open. But, she clarified that it was actually her sister, Infectious Disease Specialist Annie Luetkemeyer, who was doing the helping.

JULIE BOWEN: So she goes all Meredith Gray, right away. Starts applying pressure and doing, like, doctor stuff, and I brought all my professional expertise to the table by yelling things that I'd heard on episodes of ER.

KYLIE MAR: Julie, who said her 12-year-old twin boys and knife-obsessed 14-year-old son also played roles in helping the hiker, couldn't help but notice how much credit she has been getting in the media, with some even elevating her to superhero status. So she lent a copyediting hand.

JULIE BOWEN: What that really should have said was, during medical emergency, Bowen does jack [BLEEP].

KYLIE MAR: Fortunately, the hiker, Minnie John is doing well and was excited to meet the "Modern Family" actress, despite having a head injury. And while that was Julie's biggest takeaway from the event, she wants ours to be the fact that she is no hero.

JULIE BOWEN: So just to recap, everyone helped save this woman. My sister, my twins, my knifey son. And I, did nothing.
