Jimmy Carter's Casket Arrives at U.S. Capitol in Horse-Drawn Funeral Procession
The 39th U.S. president was ceremoniously brought from the U.S. Navy Memorial to the Capitol rotunda on Tuesday, Jan. 7, so that mourners can pay their respects
Jimmy Carter has arrived at the United States Capitol one last time.
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the former president's remains were transported from Georgia to Washington, D.C., where he was welcomed with a horse-drawn procession to the Capitol steps.
Carter's casket will be on display under the Capitol dome until his state funeral on Thursday, Jan. 9, after which he'll return to his final resting place — his longtime home in Plains, Ga.
Carter's family accompanied his remains on board Special Air Mission 39, which departed Atlanta on Tuesday morning and arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland early in the afternoon.
The late president's casket was driven via motorcade to the U.S. Navy Memorial — a nod to his military service — and then transferred to a horse-drawn caisson that proceeded to the U.S. Capitol.
Navy members and the U.S. Army Band also marched in the procession, and spectators lined the streets amid freezing temperatures to get a glimpse.
Military body bearers received Carter's casket outside of the Capitol on Tuesday afternoon and carried him into the rotunda. There, the 39th U.S. president will lie in state until Jan. 9, as members of the public are encouraged to pay their respects.
The military will sustain a guard of honor throughout the public visitation.

Carter's funeral arrangements began Saturday, Jan. 4, following his death on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100.
The state funeral started in Americus, Ga., at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, where the late president's remains were held. The motorcade then paused in front of Carter's boyhood home, and the National Park Service paid tribute to him by ringing the historic farm bell 39 times.
The late president then arrived in Atlanta at the Georgia State Capitol, after which he traveled to the Carter Presidential Center. Tuesday marked the end of nearly two and a half days of the former president lying in repose at the center.
On Thursday, the National Funeral Service will commence in Carter's memory. After leaving the nation's capital, Carter's remains will be transported back to Georgia, where there will be a private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church.
He will then return to the Carter residence — accompanied by the public lining the motorcade route and the U.S. Navy's "Missing Man" formation flyover — before a private interment ceremony concludes his funeral arrangements.
