Jet Carrying the Gonzaga Men's Basketball Team Avoids Near Collision with Delta Plane in Nail-Biting Video: WATCH
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the near-miss that occurred at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, Dec. 27
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a near collision between a Delta passenger plane and a private jet carrying the Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team.
Harrowing footage of the Dec. 27 incident shows air traffic controllers telling the private jet, Key Lime Air Flight 563, to stop as it continued to cross the runway where Delta Flight 471 was taking off.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. local time at Los Angeles International Airport, the FAA confirmed.
"Air traffic controllers directed Key Lime Air Flight 563 to hold short of crossing a runway at Los Angeles International Airport because a second aircraft was taking off from the runway at the time," the FAA told PEOPLE in a statement. "When the Embraer E135 jet proceeded to cross the hold bars, air traffic controllers told the pilots to stop. The jet never crossed the runway edge line."
In the clip, the Delta aircraft is taking off while an air traffic controller warns the taxiing jet in the background, "Key Lime, stop, stop, stop!'
The jet carrying the Spokane, Wash., university team members then halts while the passenger plane safely ascends from the runway.
PEOPLE contacted Gonzaga University for comment but did not receive an immediate reply.
