Japan's ruling party official Takaichi calls for 'strategic' fiscal spending

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida reshuffles his cabinet

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's ruling party official and candidate running in the party's leadership race, Sanae Takaichi, on Monday called for deploying "strategic" fiscal spending to support the economy.

"Strategic deployment of fiscal spending will increase jobs, household income, and improve consumer sentiment. It will also increase tax revenues without raising the tax rate and help build a strong economy," Takaichi told a press conference to announce her intention to run in the Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) leadership race scheduled on Sept. 27.
