Former Essendon player and coach James Hird had his Audi stolen during a home invasion in Melbourne.

Police say unknown offenders broke into a Toorak home between 12am and 1.30am on Friday and stole a silver Audi Q7 station wagon, registration XCA-676, and electronics.

"We were all upstairs sleeping, it was a bit scary," Mr Hird told the Nine Network on Friday.
