Former AFL star Shannon Grant is on bail as he plans to fight a jail sentence imposed for repeatedly assaulting his girlfriend.
The 41-year-old was sentenced to six months behind bars by a Melbourne magistrate on Tuesday, but spent just two hours in custody before lodging an appeal and walking from court.
The North Melbourne premiership midfielder pleaded guilty to three counts of assault and one of recklessly causing injury and his lawyer sought a non-custodial sentence.
She cited Grant's problems with alcohol and emotions at the time he assaulted his now-ex partner.
But the magistrate ordered jail after hearing details of the assaults, including that Grant stomped on the woman's bare foot on one occasion.
The court was told Grant had each time tried to snatch the woman's phone away, suspecting she had been texting other men.
His appeal is due to be heard in August.
