'I've got a few more years to go': Doctors amazed after 92-year-old survives stroke
Doctors are amazed a 92-year-old grandfather has survived a stroke with no side effects, after it was feared the patient would be left permanently disabled.
Joseph Wisdom, from Narre Warren in Melbourne’s south east, was rushed to hospital after his partner Dorothy noticed his mouth drooping while they were out grocery shopping.
“It was frightening to see him like that. He’s everything to me,” Dorothy told 7 News.
Given Mr Wisdom’s age, doctors feared the worst. But thanks to a quick-thinking team of experts at Monash Health, Mr Wisdom is now living life to the fullest.
Doctors decided on a procedure called endovascular clot retrieval, which involves reaching through the arteries to remove the clot from the brain.
“Had we not gone in and treated him, he would have been in a nursing home,” Monash Health’s Dr Shaloo Singh said.
“The fact that he’s back to living his life and mowing lawns is the most rewarding thing of all.”
The hospital’s Associate Professor Ronil Chandra said “every minute counts” in time-critical decisions, such as Mr Wisdom’s case.
“Every minute lost reduces the chance of that patient walking out the door,” he said.
There are no signs of the nonagenarian slowing down any time soon, after his remarkable recovery.
“I don’t feel any ill effects at all. It’s just great… I’ve got a few more years to go now,” Mr Wisdom laughed.
“I don’t think they’re ready for him up there yet,” Dorothy joked.
