'It was huge': Family's close call as great white brushes against boat

A friendly great white shark has given a family the shock of their lives after they spotted the ocean giant swimming peacefully alongside a boat they were on.

The group were on a trip from Provincetown to Plymouth, in Massachusetts, USA, on Friday (local time) when they spotted the beast they estimated to be about five metres long, CBS Boston reported.

Siblings Sean and Serena Colbert and their cousin Mallory Fey were heard expressing their amazement in video captured of the close-up experience.

The trio were about half way to their destination on a seven metre boat when they made the shocking discovery.

In footage of the event, the shark was seen slowly swimming along the length of the vessel, at one point even bumping into its side.

“That is unreal,” someone said, as another exclaimed, “Oh my God, no way”.

“It was huge. It seemed like it was the size of our boat,” Serena told the news site.

Sean was reportedly about to take a dip when the family spotted the animal’s dorsal fin peaking out of the water.
