Interpreter's unfortunate mishap during press conference: 'Oh s***'

Mike Webb will no doubt be forgiven for swearing at a state government press conference after an unfortunate turn of events left him a victim of Mother Nature.

The Auslan expert, who has been a prominent feature at Queensland's live addresses in recent years, was signing for Deputy Premier Steven Miles on Wednesday when an owl emptied its bowels on top of him.

The majority of the mess ended up down the left shoulder of his blue suit jacket while some of the poo even landed on his face, just above his left eye.

"Oh s***," he proclaimed when he realised what had happened, as Mr Miles looked on in disbelief.

With help from those around him he quickly took off his jacket and wiped the poo from his face.

And without flapping, Mr Webb jumped straight back into his duties as Mr Miles, who promised to be quick, continued.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk took to Twitter to praise Mr Webb for his professionalism.

"Nothing stops our fabulous Mikey," she said.

"Mikey is a hero," another person commented on Twitter.

Mr Webb grew up with deaf parents and became an interpreter in 1999.

"I'm very blessed to have had the life I had … Mum and Dad both being so prominent in the community, I've got such a big extended family of deaf community members," he told the ABC last year.

While Queenslanders have become to recognise him as a household figure on their TV sets during Covid-19, he also interprets at music gigs, with video of him signing AC/DC in 2020 gaining traction online thanks to his energetic approach.
