The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Energean

In fact, the recent purchase by Non-Executive Director Efstathios Topouzoglou was not their only acquisition of Energean shares this year. Earlier in the year, they paid UK£7.93 per share in a UK£968k purchase. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being UK£6.35). Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

In the last twelve months Energean insiders were buying shares, but not selling. Their average price was about UK£6.07. Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Energean insiders own 23% of the company, currently worth about UK£262m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Energean Insiders?

It is good to see recent purchasing. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest Energean insiders are well aligned, and quite possibly think the share price is too low. Nice! So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
