An inner-Sydney unit block has been severely damaged by an early morning fire, with 11 residents evacuated and an elderly man taken to hospital.
Six fire trucks raced to the Newtown blaze about 6.30am on Tuesday with a Fire & Rescue NSW spokesman saying the roof and ceiling of the two-storey block had collapsed.
Eleven people were safely evacuated from the Edgeware Road residence as firefighters contained and extinguished the blaze.
One man has been transferred to RPA hosptial for medical checks, the spokesman told AAP.
Firefighters are carrying out a secondary search of the building to ensure everyone is accounted for.
