Man declared dead found to be alive on autopsy table

A man who had been declared dead after a car crash reportedly woke up in a morgue moments before his autopsy was to be performed.

Himanshu Bharadwaj came close to being cut open but a pathologist at a hospital in Nagpur, India realised he was still alive, India's Daily Bhaskar reports.

The pathologist found a pulse just as he was picking up a blade to perform the autopsy.

Bharadwaj was resuscitated and rushed to a different ward in the hospital after he was found to be alive.

The publication reports he had been seriously hurt in a car accident this week, after which he was sent to hospital. His condition worsened and he was declared dead before being sent for autopsy.

Dr Gedam, of Chhindwara District Hospital, said the patient's “respiration was dysfunctional” and his “pulse was also missing", The Sun reports.

“However, his respiratory organs began responding. At times, in brain dead patients, the heart and the respiratory system stop functioning transiently, which seems to be the case here," he said.

“Himanshu is still brain dead. Thus, we have referred him to Nagpur due to lack of sufficient facilities locally.”
