Newlywed bride and three family members drown while trying to take selfie at dam

A newlywed and three members of her family have died after plummeting into a dam.

The woman identified as V Nivedha, 20, died after her 14-year-old relative, Santosh, slipped, and pulled her and four other members of the family into a dam at Tamil Nadu in India’s south, CNN reported.

Ms Nivedha’s 25-year-old husband G Perumalsamy managed to save his 15-year-old sister, Yuvarani Perumalsamy.

The pair survived but relatives Sneha, 22, and Kanniga, 20, died.

S Prabhakar, a senior police official, said the group had been trying to take a selfie.

Seventy of them died from drowning.

A notable case last year saw an Indian student drown while his oblivious friends took a selfie.

Trains and other forms of transport followed closely with 51 deaths, while fire and falling from heights were responsible for 48 deaths each.
