'Impressive' 7,000km milestone highlights world-beating shift on Australian roads
In Western Australia, the country's largest electric vehicle network has now been completed.
Australia's electric vehicle uptake continues to rise, with there now being double the amount of EVs on our roads in 2025 than in 2022. With so many new vehicles, so too comes the need for expanded charging infrastructure — and one state is spruiking its latest milestone.
In Western Australia, Premier Roger Cook recently revealed the "country's longest EV network" — spanning thousands of kilometres long — had been completed.
"We promised Australia’s longest EV network and we’ve delivered. Our EV highway is now complete — connecting 7,000km of WA across 110 charging points," he said.
"It’s about bringing down barriers to electric vehicle ownership and helping more West Aussies get out and visit our beautiful State."
Responding to the announced completion, Julie Delvecchio, chief executive at the Australian Electric Vehicle Council said not only is the network the country's largest, it's one of the most significant to emerge across the globe.
"This is not just Australia's longest EV network, given the sheer distance and remoteness this is one of the most impressive EV networks on the planet," she told Yahoo News Australia.
"This is a fantastic achievement for WA, but an important milestone for the country as well. If an Australian EV driver can comfortably travel tens of thousands of kilometres across the most sparsely populated state."
Delvecchio argued it's another "powerful indication of how range anxiety" is swiftly "becoming a concern of the past."
Australia's EV uptake slowly grows
Stretching all the way north to Kunururra, southwest to Esperance and east to Kalgoorlie and Eucla, the "EV highway" features 110 charging points across 49 locations in the country's largest state.
As of early 2025, the total number of EVs on Australian roads now exceeds 180,000, more than double compared to just a few years ago.
By late 2024, EVs accounted for 9.5 per cent of new car sales, a significant increase from previous years but still lagging behind global leaders such as Norway (over 80 per cent), China (40 per cent), and the UK (20 per cent).
There are now more than 120 electric car models available across Australia made up of more than 220 variants. China in particular has rapidly expanded its presence in Australia's EV market, driven by brands like BYD, MG and Great Wall Motors.

Revolutionary plan to boost electric vehicle uptake in Australia
BYD has become one of the top EV brands in the country and China's dominance in EV manufacturing has accelerated Australia's transition to electric vehicles.
Meanwhile, the number of fast and ultra-fast charging stations across the country has almost doubled in the past 12 months.
