'I'm ashamed of myself': Woman accused of having sex with student breaks down

A teacher at a Catholic college who had an intimate relationship with her student would sneak into his home for sex, a court has heard.

Former Christian Brothers College teacher Sonia Mackay gave the student a key to her house and supplied him with alcohol, drugs and cigarettes.

The 42-year-old started having sex with the student when he was just 17.

The prosecutor said she had “groomed” the boy over several months.

They would meet at her house and she would sneak into his home when his parents were out, the court was told.

Mackay bought the teenager expensive gifts and underwear, and kept some of his clothing in her home.

In a victim impact statement the boy said he was “an emotional wreck on a daily basis” and that he never wanted to see the former teacher again.

The court was told Mackay manipulated him into continuing the relationship by threatening self-harm.

The victim’s mother said Mackay “lacked a moral compass”.

“You manipulated my son’s emotions, you carelessly destroyed him,” the mother said.

Mackay sobbed uncontrollably while reading an apology to the family.

“I’m so ashamed of myself,” she said.

“I’m a good person who made a really big mistake.”

Mackay will be sentenced next month.
