Ilford murder: Three arrests after 50-year-old man is stabbed to death in east London
A murder probe has been launched after a 50-year-old man was fatally stabbed in east London.
Police rushed to Chapel Road in Ilford at around 1.06am on Friday following reports of a stabbing.
The victim was found in a block of flats' corridor with stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead at 1.30am.
Three men - aged 40, 36 and 28 – were arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody.
Detective Chief Superintendent Lewis Basford said: "My thoughts are first and foremost with the man’s friends and family. I understand this incident will cause concern in the local community, but I’d like to reassure you that this investigation is progressing at pace led by specialist detectives.
“However, I’d encourage anyone who has any information who hasn’t spoken to us yet to get in touch. My officers will continue to patrol the area over the next few days to offer reassurance and listen to your concerns.”
DCI Kelly Allen, leading the investigation, added: "My team have been busy carrying out a number of enquiries and we have already arrested three people in connection with the murder.
“However, our investigation continues and I’d appeal to anyone who has any information, no matter how small, to contact my team so we can ensure those responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice.."
The victim's next-of-kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.
A friend of the victim spoke of his shock saying he saw him “laughing and joking” only days ago.
Matthew Buckingham, 20, said: “He was hardworking and I knew him for at least three months.
“I began to see more of him at an organisation I was working at, and it was great seeing a smile on his face.
“It's crazy because I saw him only on Wednesday when he was laughing and joking, and I got a phone call this morning to say he was no longer here. His family can't even talk, they're so upset.”
Police urge anyone with information to call 101, quoting CAD 298/04OCT, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
