Icy winds batter Australia's coast as cyclone brews: 'Heavy rain'

Hazardous surf is predicted to batter Sydney's coast, as a cyclone prepares for landfall in the country's north west.

Millions of Aussies will shiver through the day in freezing, windy conditions, as one state prepares to be hit by a tropical cyclone.

At 6.30am on Monday, parts of Sydney hit their coldest temperature since November 17 last year, with a maximum of 8.5 degrees in Parramatta. The mercury only rose as high as 11 degrees by 7am in the CBD, after reaching a maximum of 21.3 degrees on Easter Sunday.

Residents in Sydney will see hazardous surf conditions along the coast as fresh winds batter the area, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning against water activities such as fishing, boating, or swimming.

Autumn conditions will see temperatures in the low 20s all week, with clear conditions in Sydney until Wednesday. Thursday will likely see up to 15mm of rain, easing into the weekend.

Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe said wet weather could continue across the week ahead but showers in the southeast are forecast to ease.

“There’s also patchy frost mainly for the elevated terrain through Monday and Tuesday mornings,” he said. “We’ll see much of Australia drying up. Still showery in eastern Victoria and central parts. There’s a line of wet weather moving into the west of Tasmania.”

Cyclone to 'bring heavy rain'

Queensland’s capital will see a relatively clear week of weather, with temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s.There’s little chance for rain in Brisbane until the weekend, but windy conditions are likely to continue until Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a tropical cyclone is still brewing off the north coast of Western Australia.

Mr Sharpe said the tropical cyclone is forecast to bring “hundreds of millimetres of rainfall,” as well as gusts up to 200 km per hour to the state over the coming week. “There are showers and storms picking up over the next few days, while a severe category 3 and above (cyclone is) likely to strike WA as early as Monday but most likely Tuesday,” Mr Sharpe said.

“It’s most likely to make landfall along the northern WA coast land, between Broome and Port Hedland. These communities need to keep a very close watch and be ready for any cyclone development.”

Mr Sharpe said the development of the tropical cyclone will see rain continue to move across the country towards the east coast throughout the week. “It’s going to bring heavy rain, especially to WA but some of it will flow down and across the country late next week, so there’s plenty of rain on the cards across the country through the next eight or so days,” he said.

The BOM on Sunday said there was a “significant risk” the system could become a severe tropical cyclone from Wednesday.

Melbourne fails to break Easter record

Melbourne was on its way to breaking an 80-year record for the coldest Easter weekend since the 1920s but managed to stay above the record 14 degrees on Easter Sunday – reaching a top of 15.5 degrees at 3.30pm.

Temperatures in the high teens and low 20s throughout the week might warm things up just a little, but the rain will likely be back to dampen the mood. The city will see a 60 per cent chance of up to 3mm on Monday, escalating to 9mm on Wednesday. Light winds and sunshine on Friday will provide some relief before a weekend full of showers.

South Australia’s capital will see temperatures in the high teens to mid 20s throughout the week, with a high chance of showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
