'I hope he dies': Clinton ex-staffer's tweet after Trump's virus diagnosis

A former spokesperson for Hillary Clinton has reacted to President Donald Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis by tweeting that she “hopes he dies”.

Zara Rahim, who has also worked for Barack Obama and Vogue magazine, posted the now-deleted tweet after it was announced Trump and his wife Melania were both infected with Covid-19.

"It's been against my moral identity to tweet this for the last four years, but I hope he dies,” it said.

Another tweet that is still live features a smiling selfie with the caption: “This f***ing rules”.

Trump supporters were quick to jump to his defence, questioning Ms Rahim’s standards and trolling her on a personal level.

“You worked for Hillary. You haven’t had a moral identity,” one Twitter user wrote.

“After Trump’s re-election, I wonder, will you have the reflective capability to ponder that it’s disgusting horrible people like yourself, that got him re-elected? I doubt it,” another said.

“Prepare to be cancelled to hell!” a person said.

One labelled her a “soulless monster”, while others warned karma will come back to bite her.

Others thought Ms Rahim went too far with her message.

“It’s disgusting to wish death on somebody even if you strongly disagree with them,” one person said.

“You never ever wish death upon someone. Crude comment and a very unneeded distraction,” a woman tweeted.

Trump revealed he and the First Lady had both tested positive for Covid-19 on his Twitter page.

He said that they have begun their “quarantine and recovery process immediately”.

“We will get through this TOGETHER!”

Mr Trump’s age puts him at higher risk of serious complications from a virus that has now killed more than 200,000 people in his country.

Donald Trump is 74 years old, while Melania Trump is 50 years old.

Putin sends Trump get-well-soon telegram

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent Trump a telegram to wish him a swift recovery after his diagnosis, Russian news agencies have reported, citing the Kremlin.

"I am certain that your inherent vitality, good spirits and optimism will help you cope with this dangerous virus," Putin's telegram said, according to the Interfax news agency.

The Kremlin said on Friday that Putin plans to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and an announcement will be made when that happened.
