'I burst into tears': Woman finds dead father's records 7 years after they were stolen

A woman left heartbroken by the theft of her late dad’s record collection, has been reunited with some of his “prized vinyl” in an incredible twist of fate.

Shyla Norton’s dad died when she was seven, and along with most of his possessions, she inherited his record collection.

When she was 21 however, someone stole all the records from her home in Oklahoma City, in the US state of Oklahoma, in an act that left her “heart broken”, particularly because she never got a chance to listen to them.

Having recently purchased a turntable of her own though, she had taken to perusing vintage and second-hand stores to add to her personal collection.

In one expedition, she almost couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw her dad’s name scrawled on a record cover.

“I’m flipping through the records and I see something written on the front of an album cover but it doesn’t click. I literally thought, ‘surely not’ and I kept moving.

“Three flips later, I see another. And clear as day I read it. My dad’s name, Steve Norton.”

She explained how her dad wrote his name on all his records, so there was no question the ones she saw definitely belonged to him.

“I immediately burst into tears and ran to find my boyfriend,” she wrote.

“He helped me search through every record on the shelves. The only two we found were the originals I came across.”

Now, she finally has a chance to listen to the same music her dad once did.

“Like I always dreamed as a kid, I get to listen to my dad’s records. What are the odds?.”

In her post to a second-hand finds Facebook group, Ms Norton shared photos of the records and underlined her dad’s signature on the two pieces.

In a follow-up post, the young woman explained her dad had been a musician who had died of an aneurism just before his 46th birthday.

“He was a blues musician and singer. He loved music very much and made it part of our daily lives. He took me to my first concert, Chuck Berry, when I was 5,” Ms Norton explained.

She also listed the other albums she remembered being in his collection which included –– among others –– Janis Joplin, Queen, The Beatles, Ruby Starr, Led Zeppelin and The Monkees, in the hope of locating more of her dad’s records.

“His signatures found on records are either Steve Norton, Steven Norton, Norton, or SN. The span of music ranges from old country and western, to classic rock, blues, and classical guitar pieces,” she said.
