An elderly couple have stayed true to their wedding vows in the most heartbreaking way possible – dying on the same day just hours apart.
Frances and Herbert Delaigle were married for 70 years before taking their final breaths on July 12 in Augusta, Georgia.
Mr Delaigle died aged 93 at 2.20am, and exactly 12 hours later at 2.20pm Mrs Delaigle passed away, aged 86, news site KCBD reported.
The couple first met when 16-year-old Mrs Delaigle was working at a cafe. Her soon-to-be husband observed her for a while before plucking up the courage to ask her on a date.
They went to the movies, and a year later they were engaged.
In an interview in 2018, the couple said their wedding was nearly called off because of how late they were to the church.
After some convincing, the preacher proceeded with the service, for which Mr Delaigle paid just AUD$7.10 (USD$5) – an equivalent of AUD$78.15 (USD$55) today.
The family described the couple’s relationship as an “amazing love story” in a statement released on Friday, local time.
“It's amazing how they were together for 71 years and now they are together in heaven,” the Delaigle family said.
“What an amazing love story that is.”
