A humpback whale calf that became stranded on a Queensland beach has been euthanised.
The mammal washed ashore on Woodgate Beach on Queensland's Burrum Coast on Thursday with what witnesses said appeared to be shark bites.
Evelyn Bell told the Bundaberg News Mail that after attempts to get the whale back in the water "we could see the sharks attacking it in the water and then it managed to come back to shore."
A Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services spokesperson said the calf was euthanised due to its injuries and the presence of sharks.
"As the humpback population increases we can expect to see an increase in the number of whale strandings," the spokesperson said.
