Williams, 28, recently moved back to his hometown of Columbia, S.C., to take a job as a dance teacher, a source close to the actor tells PEOPLE.

He was last seen at his home on Thursday, Oct. 3., the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said in a release, and was reported missing the following day.

According to an incident report reviewed by PEOPLE, Williams' mother told police he had left around 9 a.m. on Thursday and had not been heard from for over 24 hours, which was “out of character” for him. He is also in need of prescription medication, his family stressed.

Police say Williams was last seen driving around the Congaree National Park in central South Carolina.

Family members initially believed that he had been in a car accident, after they were made aware of an SOS alert from his phone that indicated he had been in a crash, police confirmed to PEOPLE. They received the ping, Williams' aunt Christine McLaughlin Barber told authorities, through a friend in New York who noted that the message was sent within ten minutes of Williams leaving the house.

But Williams' car was later recovered by police in a parking lot not far from the national park on the Palmetto Trail, a 500-mile stretch that runs across South Carolina. There was no evidence of a crash.
