'Too close!': Huge shark stuns beachgoers where Jaws was filmed

A four-metre shark has terrified beach-goers after it was spotted swimming in shallow water at the same beach where Jaws 2 was filmed.

A fire department in Florida, US, shared pictures of the large hammerhead swimming just a few metres from the shoreline as a warning Tuesday.

A series of pictures show the shark’s fin popping out of the water at Navarre Beach, while woman in a bikini watches on.

It could be a case of life imitating art, as the predator appeared at the same beach where Stephen Spielberg’s 1975 sequel Jaws 2 was filmed.

“Approximate 13 foot Hammerhead shark swimming just off our beach today!” the Navarre Beach Fire Rescue wrote alongside the pictures.

“A little close for me,” one woman commented.

Another said swimmers needed to heed caution because “we are in their backyard” after all.

The shark-spotting comes after an American tourist was attacked and killed by three sharks while snorkelling in the Bahamas.

Shark attacks in Australia

While shark attacks are relatively rare in Australian waters, the marine predators are usually found around river outlets in dirty water, especially after a storm. To minimise the chances of coming across a shark, it’s best to avoid these areas.

Also watch out for bait balls or schools of fish, which are often followed by sharks looking for a meal.

Experts also say it is best to avoid swimming at dusk and dawn due to low visibility.
