The wife of Olympian Geoff Huegill has been charged with shoplifting after allegedly stealing a pair of expensive leather pants from a store in northern NSW on Mother's Day.

Sydney-based socialite Sara Huegill was arrested on Sunday afternoon by mounted police in Byron Bay, a NSW Police spokeswoman told AAP on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old is accused of stealing a pair of $2500 leather Bassike pants from the Island Luxe store, News Corp Australia said.

Huegill was issued a field court attendance notice for shoplifting and is due to appear at Byron Bay Local Court on June 7.

The alleged stolen property has been returned to the store, police said.

It's not the first time the mother-of-two has had a brush with the law.

She pleaded guilty, along with her husband, for possessing cocaine at the Randwick races in 2014.

The couple was given a six-month good behaviour bond.

Police stopped the two-time Olympic medallist in April 2014 as he emerged from the disabled bathroom at a private function at Sydney's autumn racing carnival.

He was carrying a small quantity of cocaine.

The couple's lawyer, Dean Woodbury, said Sara Huegill volunteered to officers she was also carrying the drug.
