Housing crisis: Disgust over 'absolutely crazy' $1300 Sydney rental
Despite the high asking price the house in a popular Sydney suburb appears to be littered with problems.
A look into a dilapidated Sydney rental listed for $1300 per week has gone viral as the housing crisis continues to challenge Aussie house hunters.
The four-bedroom house in a prime Strathfield location sold for $3.7 million in April, but appears to be littered with problems including possible mould, large stains and widespread damage. Such is the neglect of the home put onto the rental market that a dead mouse was found rotting on pavers in the yard, as shared by one prospective tenant on TikTok this week.
"$1300 per week," they said in the accompanying caption, expressing dismay at the state of the listing.
The house is listed well above Sydney's median house rental price which is $962 for August, according to SQM Research, as rental prices continue to rise. Four bedroom houses in Strathfield were fetching a median rental price of $1225 in June, according to the NSW Tenants' Union Rental Tracker.
The footage shared online starts with a zoomed-in view of a dead mouse that looks like its been there for quite a while, then pans through the yard which has grass growing over the outdoor tiles and a rusted shed.
Moving inside, the video shows the ceiling in the dirty-looking kitchen, which appears to be damaged. Black streaks and various other damage can also be observed on walls and inside the bathroom, which appears to have mouldy tiles in the shower, as well as a filthy shower curtain on display.

People shocked by state of Sydney rental
The video has since received thousands of views with its contents standing in stark contrast to the seemingly touched-up photos shared in the advertisement for the rental property on realestate.com.au.
Many online remarked at how shocked they were by the price and condition of the house, but recognised how depressingly common it is to see listings like these due to a shortage of rental homes.
"No way?? $1300 a week, are you serious?? That’s absolutely crazy. They make it look clean in the pictures on their website," one person claimed, while another simply labelled the house "a piece of s***".
"What rental crisis they say," another joked sarcastically. "They aren’t even trying anymore. People are desperate and they know it," a third person said.
Yahoo News Australia has contacted the agent of the property for comment.
