House of the Dragon has officially been renewed for a third season.

The exciting news is likely a surprise for many as its second season has yet to even hit screens – it will be premiering on Sunday (June 16) on HBO / streaming service Max in the US and on Monday (June 17) on Sky Atlantic in the UK.

It has been confirmed that showrunner Ryan Condal will return to House of the Dragon next season, where he will continue to work in tandem with franchise author George RR Martin.

HBO's Francesca Orsi announced the renewal: "George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon.

"We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three."

Excitement for the show seems to be at an all-time high, since House of the Dragon viewers have had to wait nearly two years between seasons.

It looks as if the wait will be worth it, since the second season has an impressive 88% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, with early reviews praising its measured pace and heightened emotional stakes.

The first hints that House of the Dragon would continue came from series creator George RR Martin, who said in December that HBO was already developing a third and fourth season.
