Insane temperature breaks Aussie record

A remote area in the Pilbara has broken records for Australia’s highest winter temperature.

A weather station at Yampi Sound in Western Australia recorded a temperature of 41.5 degrees shortly before 3pm on Monday.

The Bureau of Meteorology provisionally confirmed the temperature is the highest on official record for an Australian winter

“The Bureau can provisionally confirm that the 41.6 degrees Celsius temperature at Yampi Sound today, Tuesday 27 August 2024, exceeded the old August record of 41.2 degrees Celsius, which was reached at West Roebuck on 23 August 2020,” a spokesperson told NewsWire.

“This temperature of 41.6 degrees Celsius at Yampi Sound is also the hottest August temperature for any location in Australia. It is the new Australia-wide maximum temperature record for any winter month.”

The new record temperature beats the previous record of 41.2 degree at West Roebuck in WA on August 23, 2020.

It come as the region continues to experience an unseasonably hot air mass.

BOM also told NewsWire the following locations also broke their August and winter maximum temperatures in the last two days:

  • Fitzroy Crossing at 40.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday

  • Derby at 40.7 degrees Celsius on Monday

  • Wyndham at 40.6 degrees Celsius on Monday

  • Kununurra at 40.2 degrees Celsius on Monday

Bureau presenter Sarah Scully said the unseasonably warm conditions will continue across the northern parts of the country on Tuesday.

In Queensland, temperatures are forecast to be 6-12 degrees above the August average, with Brisbane forecasting 28 degrees.

Townsville is set to reach 28 degrees, while inland at Mt Isa temperatures will hit 35 degrees.

Ms Scully said hot and dry conditions will also continue in the Northern Territory, with a forecast of 35 degrees for Darwin and 37 degrees in Katherine on Tuesday.

In WA, temperatures are set to reach 39 degrees in Broome and 37 degrees in Port Hedland.

It comes as the hot weather continues across the northern parts of the country, with many areas forecast to reach temperatures above 30 degrees.

“Warm weather is forecast to continue across much of Australia this week and into the weekend, with no weather systems forecast to force the hot air away from the country,” the Bureau stated.

“The heat will extend towards the east coast of Queensland and NSW this week.”

According to the Bureau, temperatures are forecast to hit a maximum of 34 degrees in the Queensland capital next Saturday.

Brisbane’s August mean maximum temperature is 21.8 degrees.

The records continue to be broken, as Oodnadatta registered the hottest August temperature ever recorded anywhere in South Australia at 39.4 degrees on Saturday.

Meanwhile, severe wind warning remain in place for parts of south western parts of WA, most of Tasmania and southern parts of Victoria throughout Tuesday.
