Horse rider found after going missing for four days 'never gave up hope'

The adventurous mum and horse rider who was lost in the mountains for four nights has spent her first day at home thanking those who saved her life.

Narelle Davies admits she is blown away by how many people volunteered to search for her in rugged bushland near Mansfield in Victoria’s High Country.

“I’d just gone out for a short three-hour ride that ended up becoming a little longer,” she said.

“I never lost hope. I was convinced that I would get myself out – eventually.”

The 52-year-old rider was rescued on Wednesday after becoming lost and disorientated.

“I know that I fell and hit my head in the dark,” she said. “I think that’s where I got a little confused.”

Bruised and bleeding, and with only two muesli bars to keep her going, Narelle’s survival instincts kicked in.

She and her horse, Depict, stayed near water and kept moving to stay warm.

Narelle’s partner Rich said he had never felt so relieved.

“To find her virtually uninjured and walking out was mind-blowing,” he said.

“Narelle is the strongest and most capable woman I’ve ever met. We just kept hoping and hoping and when the phone call came it was unbelievable.”

Narelle and Rich have been engaged for 10 years, but after this week’s ordeal they finally plan on getting married.

The happy couple said they will be forever thankful to those who helped save her.

“I’ve been really overwhelmed and humbled with the support that’s been shown to myself and my family,” Narelle said.

“Police, SES, Search and Rescue – everyone that’s been involved has just been amazing.”
