A man has died after he was found unconscious on a Tasmanian street following a suspected hit and run.

Tasmanian Detective Inspector David Gill said a man in his 50s was found unconscious on Swanston St in New Town about 2.50am on Friday.

The man had “significant injuries to his torso and neck area” when he was discovered.

“The man underwent surgery today and remains in a critical condition in the Royal Hobart Hospital,” Inspector Gill said on Friday.

“Throughout today, detectives have undertaken numerous enquiries including extensive door knocking and collection of CCTV, to determine the movements of the man early this morning and how he sustained his injuries.”

Police believe the man was struck by a 4WD.

“Late this afternoon police seized the 4WD vehicle believed to have been involved. The vehicle will now be forensically examined,” Inspector Gill said.

“Two people who were allegedly in the vehicle at the time it was on Swanston St this morning are assisting police with their inquiries.”

The 50-year-old was spotted on CCTV at the Kmart Plaza with another man, who has been interviewed by police.

He’s no longer considered a person of interest, with investigations ongoing.

“The police investigation is ongoing, and I ask anyone with information to come forward,” Inspector Gill said.
