Horrified local films giant rat in window of Sydney Chinese restaurant

Restaurant-goers in Sydney have been left horrified after a large rat was filmed in a shopfront window.

The family-owned Chinese restaurant in Minto, in Sydney's southwest, has reassured the community the rat’s appearance was a freak accident, The Macarthur Chronicle reports.

In the video, the rat is seen sitting on an appliance with its back turned on, hiding behind some curtains.

But Minto Chinese Restaurant owner Emily Tang told the Macarthur Chronicle the business had never had a problem with rodents and this rat had somehow entered the shop from the street.

“Every night we close the door, put down material at the door to stop the rats. We have never ever had any rats like this before," she said.

Ms Tang said the business had "a good record" with the health inspector.

The restaurant has reportedly been able to present documents showing a pest control business had visited the premises just three weeks ago.

Campbelltown Council director of city development Jim Baldwin said a council environmental health officer attended the restaurant on Thursday.

"The offending pest had been caught and contained," Mr Baldwin said in a statement.

"A thorough inspection of the premises was conducted and minor corrective actions were suggested that will be followed up by Council to ensure that they are addressed appropriately.

"The officer’s inspection revealed nothing to validate a closure of the premises and records were presented to prove pest treatment in the last few weeks. This venue has a good compliance record and strong history of appropriate compliance with the Food Act 2003."
