Homeless man reunited with stolen pet rat in heartwarming video

A homeless man who had his pet rat stolen from his makeshift home in Sydney’s CBD has finally been reunited with his furry friend.

Chris, a familiar face for many in the city’s Pitt Street mall, was left heartbroken after his black and white rat, named Lucy, was taken from him over a week ago.

After attaching a hand-written sign to a crate to inform passers-by of Lucy’s disappearance, his story quickly went viral on Facebook.

Chris had gone to a public bathroom across the street and when he returned he noticed Lucy had vanished.

“I just want her back,” he told Daily Mail Australia at the time, saying he was too afraid to leave his spot in case she came back and he wasn’t there.

On Tuesday, police released CCTV vision of a woman who they believe took Lucy from Chris’ spot.

Two days later, they were able to reunite Chris with his beloved pet who immediately recognised him and scampered on to his shoulder to give him kisses.

“She remembers me,” he says in a heartwarming video after closely inspecting her to make sure she was indeed the right rat.

“It feels wonderful, thank you very much everybody. She knows she’s missed me too.”

Twitter users praised the efforts of NSW Police, thanking them for “taking Chris seriously”.

“My heart is bursting!” one woman wrote.

“I’m so happy,” another said. “There is some humanity in the world.”
